Takashi Natsume is a boy with a special gift: he can see supernatural beings of all kinds. One day, when he accidentally frees a yokai from a curse, it joins him in the form of a cat and becomes his companion. In reality, however, Nyanko-sensei is only after a special heirloom of Takashi's, the "Book of Friends." It contains the names of the yokai over whom his equally spiritually gifted grandmother, Reiko, had gained power.
But not only Nyanko-sensei, but also many other yokai are after the book, and so Takashi's life suddenly becomes quite turbulent…
