This character dictionary supports learners in understanding Japanese texts using an easy-to-learn search system that allows characters and compounds to be looked up using the character components and the number of strokes. In addition, it provides information about the spelling and structure of each character.

The main part of the dictionary contains almost 3,000 characters reproduced in a particularly easy-to-read size with all important information such as pronunciation, meaning, spelling (stroke order), character variants, character structure and character components. The stitch symbols are arranged according to the 79-radical system, the compounds listed under the stitch symbols according to increasing number of strokes. A special feature that is important for beginners is the listing of all compounds under every kanji that occurs in them. In total, the main part includes around 20,000 Japanese words, including proper names such as the approximately 700 most common family names and the approximately 600 most common first names.

Otto Putz, Japanologist, literary scholar and translator, received the JaDe Prize 2011 "in recognition of his outstanding translations of modern Japanese literature," according to the jury.
