JAPAN FILMFESTIVAL RECAP - PART 3

JAPAN FILM FESTIVAL RECAP - PART 3

On Saturday, June 21, 2025, three prizes were awarded at the Metropolis.

Award ceremony

The jury's primary goal was to use their awards to promote and encourage independent productions. The audience for independent films in Japan is significantly smaller than in Germany, so the jury is particularly keen to encourage filmmakers to stay on track.

  • 1. Exceptional individual achievement - can be make-up, editing, sound design, etc.
  • 2. Special Prize for Best Genre Film
  • 3. Jury Prize - Best Independent Film of the Festival
  • 4. Audience Award - to be announced

1. Maidaore by Shin Yokoōji

Made a lasting impression on the jury with its elaborate costume design, setting and camera work.

2. Visitors by Ken'ichi Ugana

Entertaining and well-produced; a witty and funny homage to 80s horror-trash cinema.

3. Payment by Miyabe Kazuyuki

It's artistically outstanding, with an intense and frightening atmosphere. You get a sense of constant threat. The lighting, shadows, sound design, and camerawork underscore the whole thing particularly powerfully.

Once again, we thank the Japan Film Festival for the opportunity! These were exciting days filled with many great films. Attending world premieres, Q&A sessions with directors, and award ceremonies was an experience I've never had before. We highly recommend the JFFH to anyone interested in film. If you want to go even further, you can support the JFF and become a volunteer. Since the festival is donation-based, they are grateful for any kind of support. We would be delighted if you would give the Japan Film Festival a chance!
